‘Escape the Hurly Burley and Enjoy Christmas with a Difference’
As the main holiday season approaches in Gambia, we are turning ourselves to thoughts of the European winter and welcoming another amazing group of visitors to Hibiscus House for the year. As always, Christmas visits are one of our highlights, so we thought we’d share with you some of our thoughts, not just about Hibiscus House, but about the joys of spending your festive season in Gambia.
Why Chose Gambia for Your Christmas Holiday?
At only 6 hours travel time, and with no change in time zone from the United Kingdom, Gambia represents an extremely easy option to guarantee some winter sun.
December is also one of the finest months in the calendar in Gambia, with temperatures around 24C and around 10 hours of sunshine daily through the month. Here you can read more about Gambia Through the Year.
And what do Gambians themselves think about Xmas? Although predominantly a Muslim country, it is such a smiling nation, Gambians are happy to see everyone enjoying the time of year. Christmas is therefore about sharing a meal, a smile and spending time together, while perhaps escaping the pressures of Christmas cards and shopping for presents for a year.
What Is Christmas like at Hibiscus House?
We love Christmas at Hibiscus House, and we particularly love spending it in the Gambian sunshine. There will be decorations, but rather than the glitter of shop bought baubles, they are chosen from local markets and often ingeniously made from local palm fronds and tiny beads or beads threaded onto wires and turned into spirals. At times these are made by our team right here to decorate your table.
Hibiscus House is also perfect if you want to escape the whirlwind that Christmas can sometime bring and truly indulge yourself for a change. Slow down, relax, spend some time with those most important to you, and let us take care of making your Christmas a special one.
Christmas morning sometimes brings Santa with a sack full of freshly picked oranges, will include Bucks Fizz with your breakfast and then a day in the sunshine while we take care of the hard work. You could find yourself sipping fresh fruit cocktails by the pool or on a sun kissed beach, palms and umbrellas are always available wherever you go, and you won’t even have to think about putting a roast in the oven.
You could take a trip through the mangroves and bolons of The River Gambia, and for those searching for something a little more energetic Banjul Djemba Festival can be experienced in the streets of the capital.
As daylight fades our Christmas meal at Hibiscus House will include platters of seafood delights, African specialities and delicious fruits, followed by music and entertainments to really round off our Christmas evening. You can join the party or relax quietly with your loved ones – the choice is yours.

What Do Our Guests Think?
If you want to know a little about why our guests have chosen Hibiscus House for their Christmas holiday in Gambia, you can read more on Trip Advisor:
“A real gem”
Hibiscus House provides a wonderful, calm and relaxing environment, and it's a great base from which to explore the local area and to venture further afield. The hotel has a warm and friendly feel thanks to the lovely staff, who do their best to make you feel very welcome, and also take the time and effort to give you a flavour of the real Gambia outside the comfort of the hotel. We also really liked being located within Brufut village, which meant that we enjoyed some local events and we got to know a few local people whom we look forward to seeing on our return visit!
“Simply cannot wait.”
Simply cannot wait to return to hibiscus house, it is described as a home from home in the Gambia, well we would have to agree. We have tried others but always return to our little oasis. We have often thought about not leaving reviews but it would be so selfish to keep the wonderful hibiscus house all to ourselves. The pools are a delight and the standard of cuisine is top notch, staff helpful, attentive and always with a huge Gambian smile.
